Fashion Machine Hong Kong (2024)
Fashion Machine is an opportunity to help foster the creativity of the next generation of artists; a new, exciting breed of performance art; and a whole lot of fun. This project was originally developed at Theatre SKAM. The touring show has been everywhere from Texas to Hong Kong. Now we are ecstatic to be running the Fashion Machine Summer Camp right here in Victoria!
Participants age 9-13 will spent one week working with local artists learning about textiles, sewing, and design. Kids will be taught the fundamentals of using a sewing machine as well as important hand sewing skills. Teamwork is important for this program. Our talented counsellor/artistic mentors demonstrate the collaboration and listening skills required for the project.
At the end of the week campers with present the show to the public that is FASHION MACHINE! Brave audience member will volunteer to have an outfit made by the campers. After an interview with the subjects and a brainstorming session, the young designers retreat to their open workshop space and begin redesigning the volunteers’ outfits. The audience circles the perimeter and watches the children at work and After 50 minutes at the hands of the kids’ sewing machines, scissors, buttons, ribbons, fabric, needles and thread, the seven audience members don their remade outfits and showcase their new looks in a fashion show with commentary by the kids.
A fast paced, fun learning experience. Fashion Machine is the camp for everyone from budding tailors and designers to kids who just need a creative outlet. The project a truly a builder of community and incredible way to support the artists of tomorrow.
